The CZ 550 American has all the features of the CZ 550 Lux but in a package that has the American shooter in mind. Intended to be used with optics, it features a classic American pattern stock in walnut or Kevlar composite. The Kevlar stock features a full-length aluminum bedding block to provide an ultra stable platform. The American is not fitted with sights and is supplied with 1" scope rings.
A fixed magazine with hinged floorplate is used on rifles in .270, 6.5x55 SE, .30-06 and 9.3x62, while a detachable magazine is used on the shorter rifle cartridges -- .243, .308 and .22-250.
The 550 platform embodies aesthetic elegance and ergonomic design. It features a Mauser style claw extractor for controlled feeding and extraction and a compact trigger mechanism that is fully adjustable and able to be used as a single stage or a single set trigger. The CZ 550 has a positive 2-position safety, a classic square bridge receiver with a 19mm dovetail milled into it and a cold hammer forged, factory-lapped barrel.

I always wanted a 6.5, and after 45 years, I ordered one from CZ and I love it. This is one sweet rifle. I added a Weaver Grand Slam 3-10 x 40 scope and after breaking in the barrel, it consistently shoots 1/2" groups at a 100 meters. I am very happy with the rifle; all around, a great rifle.
i recently purchased a 550fs in 6.5x55. I hve been using sporterized swedish mausers for over 20 years now. The 550 is very accurate, cz has the target. I now have ordered the american to add to my collection. great job cz.
My CZ 550 American is from a special limited production run in 7x57mm Mauser for the US market from Jerry's Sport Center. It is a beautiful rifle with near custom quality walnut stock. High quality ammo consistently prints under 1" groups at 100 yards. My prairie hunting load for mule deer is a 162 Hornady A-Max on top of IMR 4064. It prints 1/2" groups at 100 yards. I also have a 150 Nosler Partition load on top of Win 760 that prints 3/4" at 100 yards for tougher game and closer range. My stash of old Norma factory 150 soft point spitzer boat tails prints 3/4" at 100 yards (nothing in 7x57 can beat it for velocity). All loads use Norma brass. I took my mule deer this year in south central Montana with the 162 Hornady A-Max at a lasered 300 yards. The almost-trophy-class 250# 3x3 buck gave up the ghost where he was bedded down by a ponderosa pine on a south facing rocky hillside. The A-Max shattered his left shoulder and took out the lungs. Shot was made in a 20+ MPH crosswind with sand in my eyes. The 7x57mm Mauser is a special cartridge for those of us wanting maximum effect with minimum recoil. Sadly, this cartridge chambering is getting hard to find in factory rifles. It is definitely more versatile than the 6.5x55mm Swede, especially for bigger game like moose and elk. The moderate speed allows soft, heavy, high BC bullets like the Hornady A-Max to be used at medium to long range with great results. I hope CZ-USA continues to release some rifles in this fabulous all-around chambering from time to time. Why should the Europeans have all the fun? Of course, you have to reload or buy premium (Norma or RWS) European ammo to reap full benefits of the 7x57mm in a strong modern rifle. BTW, the fast twist rate allows heavy bullets of high BC to be used, making it better than the 7mm-08 Rem for my purposes on windswept prairie hunting, or hunting big elk and moose.
Was on a recent spike buck/doe management hunt to help to thin out the excess numbers on a friend's property and I had the resulting success. Big or small my 6.5x55mm has been a deer getting machine since I purchased it in 2009. This is the third deer taken with it. A spike taken at 15-yards. Dropped in his tracks. Enough said. The results all three times I've dropped the hammer on a deer with this rifle have been consistently boring. Each time the deer drops at the shot. Now it’s time to select the merlot for some fine dining on a young and tender deer
Again, the CZ 9.3 X 62 was an excellent choice and my new favorite rifle. This was a quick shot on a zebra my last day. Complete pass through on the shoulders. Thanks CZ.
This is my new favorite rifle: CZ 9.3 x 62. I used it in Zimbabwe this year and had a great experience. This rifle was light and compact making it perfect for the thick bush. Plus, the animals thought it was a .375 HH Mag! This is one of the animals I shot with it: wildebeest. Too much fun. Thanks CZ. -Razor Dobbs
I bought a 550 American in the 6.5x55. The gun is perfect, it is so accurate and the trigger is great. The caliber is the best caliber made. I would recommend any CZ rifle to anyone especially in the 6.5x55
I could not be not more delighted with my CZ550 American in 6.5x55mm caliber. I've mounted a Weaver straight 6-power scope. It shoots everything well, S&B 140 grain soft points (my load for this year), Norma 120 grain ballistic tips, and the PMC 139 grain soft point. Actually with the latter load I've shot a .40-inch group at 100 yards - no complaints with accuracy. I've bagged two deer since purchasing the rifle. One went about 20-yards before giving up all Earthly cares; and the second was a "bang-flop" - dropped in it's tracks. Perfect... It's a very handsome, and very nice handling rifle. Probably the perfect rifle/caliber combination for Texas deer. Owning it has been a pleasure, and I would highly recommend a CZ550 rifle to all of my hunting friends. Now I wonder if the "keeper of the sacred purse strings" (my wife) would allow me to get another one, say a full stocked version in 9.3x62mm caliber to deal with the mythical "bullet proof" wild hogs some of my magnum crazed talk about.
I own two CZ rifles and two shotguns and a CZ75P01 handgun. All are excellent arms. Both of the rifles are amazing as far as accuracy goes. One is a model 527 in a .222 rem American. With a dose of H322 and a 40 gr Nosler it will shoot sub half inch groups all day long. This is not the varmint model but a light wt. rig instead. coyotes hate this rifle. The second rifle is the same model and wt. as the .222 but it is chambered for the .22 hornet. with some Lil gun and a 40 gr. nosler or berger it shoots just over a half inch consistantly. Hornets are not known for great accuracy and this thing shoots like a house afire. The p-01 is one of the most consistantly accurate handguns i've ever owned and functions EVERY TIME! Keep up the good work and I'll keep buying CZ products.
Hello, I first became interested in your products after reading reviews in several rifle magazines. Well, I went out on a limb and bought a CZ 550 in 6.5 x 55 and have never looked back. The rifle is so impressing and the cartridge is wonderful. Since the first rifle, I have added a CZ550 in 9.3 x 62, 300 Win. Mag., and 204 Ruger. My 9 year old son loved the 204, so Santa brought him CZ in 22 Hornet. He loves it and has even taken two small does with it. I guess I did not know what I was missing. Your quality is excellent and your choice of cartridges is a breath of fresh air. I would request that you add the 7x57 and 300 H&H to your CZ550 line, without having to go up to the Safari Classics. My son has been reading rifle magazines and watching the Outdoor Channel and has determined that for next hunting season, the world will end if he does not have a 300 H&H to hunt with. He told me that it was a safari cartride and he needed it. Lastly, you produce a excellent product and I intend to add a few more calibers to my list. Thanks from Alabama
